
Political Repression: Then and Now
A teach-in by Historians for Peace and Democracy
We are pleased to announce an exciting webinar “Political Repression: Then and Now.”
The webinar will take place Monday, March 10, 2025 at 3 pm eastern.
It will be broadcasted live on Youtube.
The webinar will discuss the history of political repression in the United States. The speakers will draw on their research and experiences to explore topics such as Jim Crow’s repression against Black people, attacks on civil liberties, FBI surveillance, and the various Red Scares, linking these past examples to current attacks on social movements and civil rights.
The teach-in will feature speakers:
David Cole, Hon. George J. Mitchell Professor in Law and Public Policy, Georgetown Law Center and former National Legal Director of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU)
Beverly Gage, Professor of History at Yale University, author of G-Man: J. Edgar Hoover and the Making of the American Century (Pulitzer Prize, 2022)
Robin D.G. Kelley, Gary B. Nash Endowed Chair in U.S. History at UCLA, author of Freedom Dreams: The Black Radical Imagination
Ellen Schrecker, Professor of History (retired) at Yeshiva University, author of Many Are the Crimes: McCarthyism in America
and will be moderated by HPAD co-chair Margaret Power.
